March 2026:
International French Language Day

International French Language Day (photo: France)

As one of the six working languages of the United Nations (UN), the French language will be celebrated on March 20, 2026. The date was chosen to mark the anniversary of the International Organization of La Francophonie/OIF (an association of over 50 countries where French is the native language or is spoken by a large part of the population).

In 1539, French, which belongs to the Roman languages, all of which originated from the Latin of the Roman occupying power, was established as the official national language.

Enlightenment thinkers and poets of the 17th and 18th centuries strengthened the prestige and influence of the French language, which later became the court language of the European nobility.

The Day of the French Language is intended to promote the equal use of languages and to reflect the cultural and linguistic diversity of the organization. In France, the so-called Loi Toubon has also been in force since August 4, 1994: this law is intended to protect the French language from Anglicisms, for example, and thus to counterbalance the Anglophone world. Parlez-vous français?
